News stories & announcements THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLVES THE FINAL PHASE OF THE TASK FORCE RECOMMENDATIONS The General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches held a Special Meeting at the University of Chester on Saturday 12 November and, by an overwhelming majority (116 to 4 and with only one abstention), passed a resolution to complete the constitutional changes initiated by the Task Force recommendations. A minor amendment had been agreed by a majority of 74 to 41. The General Assembly Annual Meetings in April 2005 had already resolved to create an Executive Committee, to be elected by postal ballot, and an Electoral Panel, to conduct the elections. At present, the Electoral Panel has been created and, utilising the professional facilities of the Electoral Reform Services, is currently in the middle of the nomination process. The elections will take place in January - February 2006 ready for the Executive Committee to take office at the close of the Annual Meetings in April 2006. The Special Meeting has resolved to abolish the General Assembly's Council when the Executive Committee assumes power. The members of the Executive Committee will be the Managing Trustees of the General Assembly. The resolution also empowers the Executive Committee to appoint a future chief executive officer. The General Assembly will continue to appoint a Vice President and a President in accordance with present practice. These honorary officers will perform an ambassadorial role. The President will chair the General Assembly Annual Meetings, which will remain the supreme body of the General Assembly. Jeffrey J Teagle |
