Unitarian Chapel: City of Lincoln
We strive to build a fellowship of faith that rejoices in the liberty
of all its members to believe freely in accordance with their own
conscience and experience.
We celebrate life and try to serve humanity and cherish the living
earth.
The vision of love and justice as expressed in the life and ministry of
Jesus is important to us, and we accept the spiritual insights of other
ages and traditions.
Worship and other Special Services
Formal Worship services are held at 11.00am on the first, third and fifth
Sundays. Other services including infant blessings, marriages and funerals are by
arrangement with the chapel.
Informal meetings
On the second Sunday a Music and Reflection group meets, when members and friends bring poems, reflections and music on a chosen theme, and a conversation group is held on the fourth Sunday at 11:00am. All are welcome to any of these meetings.
Church Activities
We are
actively involved with the East Midland programme of social events,
joint worship and skills development workshops. We are also currently
planning a programme of informal social events for all Lincolnshire
Unitarians, and are hoping to develop an adult Religious Education
programme later in the year.
Our Chapel and Community
Lincoln
is a beautiful Cathedral City with the advantage of having a small
town, rural atmosphere.
The present Unitarian chapel was built in 1725 when it became one of
the first dissenting places of worship in Lincoln. Its warm and
friendly quality is encouraged by the mural on the north wall, and its
wooden pillars which are thought to have been ships masts.
The congregation first met in John Disney's house in 1662.
A
fragment of a medieval window from John of Gaunt's palace was preserved when the house in High
Street, Lincoln, formerly occupied by the Disney family, was demolished
circa 1960. It was loaned to the Unitarian Chapel by the County Museums
Committee in 1987.
As a listed building, Lincoln is fortunate to have attracted funding
for restoration work both in 1985 and 1998 from the City and County
Council and English Heritage. In 2004 an access ramp was built which was funded by CORY Environmental.
