"Unitarian Laypersons' Summer School"

Unitarian Laypersons' Summer School 1998 attendees

This picture taken in 1988 by Linda Gregory (Sheffield, Norfolk Street), one of the other students, always makes me feel a little sad as two of the students shown in the picture have since died. Clive Wickenden (Sports jacket, centre left, second row) was always a wise and sage council to the General Assembly, and Grenville Needham (maroon sweater, front row) was both a Unitarian and a Quaker, and a source of inspiration to all who met him, both with his fine singing voice and, the meditation sessions that he conducted. On a more positive note, two of the students and one of the tutors have gone on to qualify as ministers, and one of the tutors went on to be denominational president in 2001/2, and another student is now on the board of the Enquirer (denominational newspaper). Many of the students, including myself, conduct worship, serve on denominational bodies and committees, and publicise the denomination via the Internet. Sue MacFarlane then of Belper congregation was also a student in 1998 and is shown in the picture.

I regard my week at Summer School as one of the highlights of my life. In 2000 Dr. Jane Russell, another member of Hinckley Great Meeting, attended ULSS and wrote a report - click on the link below to read what she thought.
