RESULT OF THE ELECTION FOR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2006-2009

The Electoral Reform Services have confirmed that the following have been elected to serve on the GA Executive Committee 2006-2009:

Jennifer Atkinson
Dawn Buckle
The Rev Stephen Dick
Dorothy Hewerdine
Neville Kenyon
The Rev Ann Peart
Sir Peter Soulsby
The Rev Robert Wightman

In addition to the above, the Honorary Treasurer, who is elected annually by the Annual Meeting, will be a member of the Executive Committee.

The Electoral Reform Services confirmed that 2,563 voting papers were distributed. 1,703 voting papers were received back by the close of voting at 12 noon on Monday 06 February 2006. Eight papers were found to be invalid (blank/spoilt) and therefore 1,694 votes were counted. The election was conducted by single transferable vote.

There are three main reasons why the electoral register of 2,563 falls short of our estimated quota membership of approximately 4,000. a) Some churches did not submit lists of members; b) some members denied permission for their names to be included in the electoral register; and c) some members failed to return the confirmation slip giving permission for their names to be added to the electoral register.
The Executive Committee will come into office at the opening ceremony of the GA Annual meetings on Thursday 20 April 2006. The first EC business meeting will be on Sunday 23 April at 14.00 hours, just after the close of the GA Annual Meetings. The EC members will meet on Friday/Saturday 24/25 March 2006 for an induction seminar, to be facilitated by Colin Fisher, the professional consultant who facilitated the Task Force.

The Executive Committee will replace both the GA Council and the Administration Commission. Although both of these bodies have recently held their last meetings, they remain in post and available for urgent decisions, should the need arise.
I have written to all of the candidates for this election, on your behalf, to thank them for their participation in this historic event. The most precious resource of the General Assembly is not money, but the people who contribute towards its activities and progress. The fact that twenty-three people were prepared to commit their time and energies to the business of the General Assembly is a most hopeful indication.

The General Assembly thanks the Electoral Panel members for their organisation of the election and also the volunteers and staff members who undertook the task of creating the electoral register. This involved in excess of 1,000 hours work.

Jeffrey J Teagle
General Secretary
15 February 2006
