Asylum Campaign meets Oldham MPs in London

The asylum campaign for Abdoulaye Diabate and Taha Ghasemi supported by members of Oldham Unitarian Chapel reached a new stage on the 20th March 2012 when both men met Oldham's MPs, Debbie Abrahams and Michael Meacher at Westminster.

The MPs took time out from an extremely busy day (before going off to deal with the Health and Social Care Bill as it went through Parliament) so that they could receive petitions containing 2000 signatures. The petitions are to be presented to the Home Office and are seeking leave for both men to remain in the ...

Two New CDs for Hymns for Living

The Unitarian Music Society are pleased to make available two new CDs for Hymns for Living . We have had two CDs available for a number of years giving 51 hymns. These early CDs are now rebranded as CDs 1 and 2. The new CDs (CD3 and CD4) give a further 50 hymns. This means that there are now 100 hymns available on CD for both Sing Your Faith and Hymns for Living .

The new CDs were recorded at Cross Street Chapel Manchester on February 18th 2012.

They are available now from David Dawson at £16.00 for the pair (price includes p&p) ...

Cross Street Unitarian Chapel First to be Awarded Licence for Civil Partnerships

Cross Street Unitarian Chapel, Manchester has this week been awarded a licence from Manchester City Council to hold civil partnerships on its premises.

The General Register Office believe that Cross Street Unitarian Chapel are the first religious premises in England & Wales to be licenced for CP's. This will enable gay and lesbian couples to hold a religious wedding ceremony on religious premises, with the civil ceremony taking place before or afterwards.

Unitarians welcome House of Lords support for Civil Partnerships in Religious Premises

15th December 2011

Derek McAuley, Chief Officer of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches , has welcomed the support of the House of Lords for civil partnerships taking place in religious premises.

Derek McAuley said:

"The support in the House of Lords is great news for equality and religious freedom. Many Unitarians and Free Christian churches in England and Wales will be keen to take advantage of this opportunity and move forward on registering their premises with individual local authorities. ...

Online Resource Library hits 10,000 pages and 200 publications.

"I'll stop when the we run out of Unitarian publications or the internet is full!" said James Barry as he finished scanning the 200th book to go on to the Unitarian Document Library. The resource is already proving popular with many different users of the Unitarian national website. Family researchers, historians, ministerial students and those searching information on liberal religions, are all finding useful material in the new online facility.

A new book has been published on the life of the Unitarian martyr Michael Servetus who was burned at the stake in Calvinist Geneva for heresy in 1553. "Servetus - Our 16th Century Contemporary" is a brief introduction to the life and teachings of Servetus, an early Unitarian thinker, scientist and pioneer of religious freedom. The publication has been produced by the International Association for Religious Freedom and was co-edited by Richard Boeke and Patrick Wynne Jones. Registration of Civil Partnerships on Religious Premises - High fees may act as a deterrent

The General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches has submitted a response to the consultation paper issued by the Government Equalities Office on civil partnerships on religious premises in England and Wales. Derek McAuley, Chief Officer said:

Minister for Equalities welcomes Unitarian Support for Civil Partnership registration on religious premises

Lynne Featherstone MP, Minister for Equalities, has welcomed the support of the Unitarian General Assembly for the removal of the ban on civil partnerships being registered on religious premises in England and Wales. Unitarians Join Faith School Reform Coalition

The General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches, the umbrella organisation for Unitarian and Free Christian congregations in the United Kingdom, has this week announced that it is joining The Accord Coalition.

Unitarians pay tribute to Sir Cyril Smith

British Unitarians pay tribute to the immense contribution of Sir Cyril Smith to national public life and to the Unitarian movement.

Sir Cyril Smith was a lifelong member of Rochdale Unitarian Church. He always supported the church and was extremely proud of his Unitarian roots. In his autobiography, "Big Cyril", he revealed the importance of his Unitarian upbringing to his approach to life; "I was taught to question established thinking" - and question he did.

Elizabeth Gaskell Bicentenary Celebrations

2010 marks the bicentenary of the birth of Elizabeth Gaskell, the accomplished writer of novels and short stories. Unitarians Support Robin Hood Tax

Criticised by his teachers when he was an A-level student for 'having facial hair', our independent minded IT consultant and professional photographer, James Barry, has continued to allow his beard to grow for thirty-three years.

In light of the tragic events unfolding in Haiti, The Unitarian Peace Fellowship has announced that this year's Annual Appeal will be in favour of the people of Haiti. Sexual violence in the Congo

New Chief Officer

The Executive Committee is pleased to announce that Derek McAuley has been appointed to the post of Chief Officer of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches. It is anticipated that he will take up the position in December 2009.
