News stories & announcements Unitarians Appoint Communications Consultant
Jim Corrigall is Chair of the congregation at Golders Green Unitarians. He says he discovered Unitarianism "almost by chance" less than four years ago. He joins us after 17 years at BBC World Service in London, where he has been a senior journalist in news and current affairs. Before that, Jim was a reporter and sub-editor on national newspapers in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Britain, including -- in the UK -- the Financial Times, Guardian and Morning Star. Jim was born and educated in South Africa, coming to Britain in 1974. A lifetime campaigner for social justice, he was an anti-apartheid activist for more than 20 years, both in South Africa and abroad. In recent years, Jim has played a leading role in his trade union, the National Union of Journalists, serving as NUJ President in 2004/5. Jim says of the task ahead: "The priorities are to raise the profile of the Unitarian movement nationally and to inform our membership about what is happening at all levels of our movement. These two issues are closely related, because a Communications Consultant is not someone with a magic wand who is, on their own, going to transform the Unitarian image. To make Unitarianism better known and attract more people to our doors will require effort from all of us. Very good work is going on in this area right now -- by individuals, congregations and groups. One of my tasks will be to help spread the message about this good practice, so that all our members can learn from it." The Chief Executive of the General Assembly of Unitarians and Free Christians, the Rev. Steve Dick, who took up his new post last month, said he was delighted that Jim's wide experience would now be available to the Unitarian movement on a professional basis. "Good communications are essential if our Unitarian communities are going to grow and flourish." |
