News stories & announcements Marking the Days: a Book of Occasional Services
We are pleased to announce the publication of Marking the Days, a companion volume to Celebrating Life. It is a collection of twenty services for special occasions for use in the Unitarian and Free Christian tradition. The specific services covered are: Watchnight Service, Homelessness Sunday, St Valentine's Day, Mothering Sunday, Maundy Thursday Communion, Easter - the Festival of Restoration, Workers' Memorial Day, Trinity Sunday, Christian Aid Week: Fair Trade, A Celtic Service for Bloomsday, One World Week: Chocolate Sharing, Remembrance Day, Universal Children's Day, Prison Sunday, World Aids Day, and Winter Solstice. In addition there are four services for any time of year: Celebrating the Arts, Celebrating Animals, Celebrating Teddy Bears, and Mothering the Mother. A number of the services, for example those marking Homelessness Sunday and World Aids Day, reflect the Unitarian concern for social justices and for human wellbeing. Others, such as the service for Teddy Bears and the one marking Bloomsday (16 June), are indicative of a willingness to experiment and a capacity to find the spiritual in widely diverse places. Others, again, mark some of the traditional dates of the Christian year. Kate Taylor is convenor of the General Assembly's Publications Panel, and an active Unitarian both locally in Yorkshire and nationally. She has acted as press officer at the General Assembly Annual Meetings. The companion volume Celebrating Life, a book of special services for Rites of Passage edited by Andrew M. Hill, has just been reprinted is also available from Essex Hall at £14 (plus p&p). The services include: Marriage, Blessing of a Civil Marriage, Blessing of a Same Sex Partnership, Birth, Recognising the End of a Marriage, a Funeral, Christian Baptism, Communion Service, Inauguration of a Ministry, and Welcome of New Members. |
