Other Congregational Activities
We enjoy a varied programme of activities including social activities like sharing meals as a congregation, and meeting for garden parties at the homes of members.
We participate actively in District and National activities.
We aim to respond to members' interests: we have started Meditation and Discussion groups.
We are members of the United Nations Association, the Unitarian Peace Fellowship and the Unitarian Church Music Society.
History of the Congregation
The Meeting House is the oldest place of worship in Newport. Members of the Angel family in Cowes in 1665 were converted by Thomas Collier, a Dissenter. They moved to Newport in 1738 and the first Meeting House was built in the family garden as part of the General Baptist movement in the South - which later evolved into Unitarianism. Their new Meeting House was built in Newport in 1774. A new frontage was added in 1825 and this extension included an organ loft and gallery.
The Meeting House is a Grade II listed building - very pleasing both inside and out with a good example of a "Nonconformist Organ" installed in 1895. The old schoolroom is now used for lettings and social occasions.
Our Minister
We do not currently have a minister. Instead, we enjoy the variety of services led by a number of visiting ministers and worship leaders.
