Charity Number 218676
We are a liberal-minded community bound together by shared values and
friendship rather than dogma. No credal test is imposed on minister or members.
Spiritual Activities
Our principal weekly service is held each Sunday morning at our church in
Channing Road, Ansdell at 10.45 - supplemented by tea, light refreshments and
chat in the adjacent church hall.
Our members run a weekly meditation and healing group. A prayer group is
held, also on a weekly basis.
Other Church Activities
Women's League meet February to June then September to December, at 2.15pm on
the 2nd and 4th Tuesday in the month..
Fairs, church dinners and luncheons are arranged inside and outside
the church - sometimes to raise money, always for social purposes.
Weekly Coffee Morning on Wednesday at 10.30am to 12.00 noon.
History of the Congregation
At the beginning of the century, people were flooding into
Blackpool and the surrounding Fylde area from all parts of
Lancashire. Unitarians gathered together, firstly in a corrugated
building in the sandhills of Ansdell - a favoured area between St
Annes and Lytham. A more permanent building was opened in 1930. Our new hall was built in 1968.
A number of our members have given distinguished public service and held
national office in the church. Including two knights: Sir Cuthbert Grundy and
Sir Herbert Pollard, and two MBE.'s - Mr W. D. Austin and Mrs Anne Smith (Mayor
of Fylde 1998/99). Two national Presidents of the Unitarian General Assembly -
Rev Herbert Crabtree and Sir Herbert Pollard. Here today we are still
catering to the liberal religious tradition.
Profile of Church Leaders
Currently we are in an exciting period where the church congregation is
effectively without a minister; we are fortunate to have the services of
visiting preachers. This is
proving to be interesting and stimulating as we uncover talents, enthusiasms and
commitment previously unplumbed: Resulting in a surge of energy, as we daily
discover new opportunities and strengths. This shows in the attitude of visitors
who feel at home as soon as they enter the church.
