Safeguarding

As an organisation, the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches takes safeguarding extremely seriously.

Making space which is safe

We have been reflecting on our space…

Our aspiration is to make space which is safe, accessible and responsive to the needs of those who are gathering.

We want to support congregations in creating space that nourishes and leads to growth. We are currently rethinking the best way that we can do that – a rethink where we explore our ideas around space and get playful with how ideal spaces can be made to meet the needs of us all.

To ensure that we are informed of best practice in safeguarding, and how our current practices align with that, we work closely with 31:8, an independent Christian charity that supports and advises churches, charities and organisations. In 2020, we commissioned them to audit our practices, and the results of this audit are guiding our work in developing safer spaces.

If you have any questions around making space which is safe or would like to join the conversation, please contact Gavin Howell – Safeguarding Lead for The General Assembly of Unitarian & Free Christian Churches.

What should I do if I’m concerned about someone’s safety?

Contact the church/event safeguarding officer. If you don’t know who that is or feel unable to approach them, then contact Gavin Howell or call 31:8 on 0303 003 11 11. If the concern is a pressing one then call the police on 999.
