This church is open to all who wish to worship with an
open mind, in a spirit of freedom, reason and tolerance.
We welcome you to this meeting place where we come together in worship. It is
the people who make this place what it is. We accept that worship has many
different meanings for each person to explore and discover. Those who speak here
have the responsibility of presenting their ideas freely, fearlessly and
faithfully. Those who listen have the responsibility of testing what they hear,
not only with the critical mind, but also in the living of every day. The
principles of freedom, reason and toleration are important to us in the quest
for truth. The members at Doncaster are what makes the Church special and all
are welcome to join us.
Worship
Unitarianism today is concerned with seeking the truth and ultimate reality,
without restriction of creed or doctrine and with tolerance for other beliefs.
Although its roots are in the teaching of Jesus it reaches out to the "things of
the Spirit" wherever they may be found. The emphasis in Unitarian worship is
upon making our lives sensitive to the Spirit of God in all its manifestations
and upon encouraging an active love for our fellows, of whatever faith or none.
Activities
Members share a cup of coffee or tea in the Church after each service, and on
occasions there will be a congregational lunch. Occasionally social events are
held such as barn dances.
Junior Church
All young people are welcome to join in with Junior Church activities.
Opportunities range from discussion based activities to more creative 'hands on'
activities. For the very young children there are a good selection of
educational toys and books but they also participate in activities specifically
planned for them. During the year the Junior Church contribute to special
services such as Mothering Sunday, Easter, Harvest and the Christmas Candlelight
Service.
History
Records of the congregation go back to 1692 with the formation in Doncaster
of a group of Protestant Dissenters in the English Presbyterian tradition. The
first building on the present site was erected in 1744 and became known as the
Unitarian Church. The present church dates from 1912, when there was an
amalgamation with a liberal Christian group ejected from the Congregational
Church. The name Free Christian Church was given at this time, but it was made
explicit that, "this in no way binds the future of the Church whose free trust
deed governs the whole situation". This open trust ensures freedom from
doctrinal test for the minister and members of the congregation. The bond of the
union of all within the Church is the unity of the Spirit.
