Communications officer

Salary: £30,000 per annum

Location: Remote working or based in our London office

Contract: Full-time

Reporting to: Chief Officer

About Us

The Unitarians are one of the UK’s oldest dissenting religious traditions – a community that has, for centuries, welcomed people to explore faith, spirituality, and meaning on their own terms. We support congregations across the UK, rooted in liberal religious values, social justice, and freedom of conscience. We’re a small national organisation with a big story to tell, and we’re looking for someone to help us tell it.

The role

We’re looking for a capable, self-starting Communications Officer to handle the day-to-day delivery of our communications — from newsletters and news content to social media and digital channels.

You’ll work closely with our Strategic Communications Consultant, who leads on strategy and direction. Your job is to feed into and execute that strategy well: producing content that’s timely, well-crafted, and on-brand, and keeping our channels active and our communities informed and connected.

This suits someone who takes real pride in the quality of their output, is comfortable working within a defined strategic framework, and wants to do meaningful work for a values-led organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Content creation and management

  • Produce and distribute regular newsletters to members, congregations, and stakeholders
  • Write news articles, blog posts, and features for our website and Uni-News email publication
  • Keep website content current, accurate, and accessible
  • Produce materials that communicate our values and activities clearly to diverse audiences

Digital and social media

  • Manage day-to-day social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, and others)
  • Create social media content including written posts, graphics, and short-form video
  • Monitor engagement, respond to comments and messages, and help build online community
  • Track and report on performance metrics across channels

Design and visual content

  • Produce graphics and visual assets for social media, newsletters, and campaigns using Canva or equivalent tools
  • Create and edit short-form video content for social and digital channels
  • Maintain visual consistency with our brand guidelines

Stakeholder engagement

  • Act as a point of contact for congregations seeking communications support
  • Gather and share stories and news from local Unitarian communities
  • Build working relationships with congregation leaders, members, and volunteers
  • Offer practical guidance to congregations on their own communications

Collaborative working

  • Work with the Strategic Communications Consultant and the Chief Officer on content development, implementing plans and flagging operational insights that may inform future direction
  • Coordinate with colleagues across the organisation to source content and stories
  • Support the delivery of campaigns and initiatives as directed

Administrative and other duties

  • Maintain media and contact databases
  • Support event promotion and coverage
  • Provide general communications support across the organisation as needed

Person Specification

Essential

  • Proven experience in a communications, content creation, or marketing role
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt tone for different audiences and purposes
  • Demonstrable experience managing social media platforms
  • Experience producing newsletters or regular publications
  • Confident using Canva or equivalent design tools to produce social and digital assets
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously
  • Openness to and genuine curiosity about the values and ethos of Unitarianism and liberal faith communities

Desirable

  • Experience working in the charity, community, or faith sector
  • Proficiency in content management systems and digital communications tools
  • Understanding of SEO and website analytics
  • Familiarity with Unitarianism or liberal religious traditions
  • Comfortable working within a strategic framework

What we offer

  • Salary of £30,000 per annum
  • 7.5% employer pension contribution, plus access to a financial wellbeing and salary sacrifice scheme
  • Staff support budget for wellbeing
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • The chance to do genuinely meaningful work in a welcoming, values-driven community

How to apply

We’re not looking for an identikit application. We’re looking for the right person.  Here’s what we’d like from you:

1. Your CV: No more than two pages please. We’d like to see the highlights of where you’ve worked and what you’ve done

2. Two or three examples of work that you are really proud of: This could be links, attachments, screenshots, we don’t mindWe want to see something you’ve done with a few short words on why you love it.

3. Two questions we’d like you to answer

Tell us about a piece of communications work you’re proud of — what was the brief, what did you do, and what would you do differently now?

What do you think most organisations get wrong about their communications?

Please answer each question in no more than 400 words. There are no right answers to either of them. We’re interested in your thinking, your honesty, and your voice.

A note on AI

All applications will be reviewed and assessed by a human and we won’t use AI for decision-making. We understand you might use AI as a thinking tool, and that’s fine, but we’re not looking for a generated answer. We want to know how you think and what you sound like. So please write like yourself.

The interview

If we invite you to interview, we’ll send you the questions in advance. There’s no presentation. We’ll have a real conversation about your work, your instincts, and how you think — and we’ll talk through a real comms scenario together.

We want you to be able to show up as yourself. If you’d find it helpful to have anything adapted — more time, a different format, written questions — just let us know when we’re in touch.

Please send your CV, work examples, and question answers to pwelsh@unitarian.org.uk by 9am on Monday 27 April 2026.

Interviews will be held the week commencing 11 May 2026.

The General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates regardless of background.
